Effective and energy efficient warehouse heating

 

From large warehouses, to small industrial units, the importance of finding the right energy efficient heating solution for your business is an important factor to consider. From floor standing to radiant heaters, all can have a huge influence on the efficiency of your warehouse heating.

 

There are four main factors to consider when deciding on the right heating solution for your business:

 

Business activities: The length of time your loading bay doors are open throughout the day can greatly impact what type of heating solution your company could need. If your loading bay is in consistent use, Schwank’s Radiant Heaters could be the perfect solution.

 

Warehouse size: if your warehouse has a large area of floor space then a high output system could be the answer, such as our Warm Air Heating System.

 

Floor Space: Alternatively, your warehouse may have limited floor space. If this is the case, Schwank recommends using a mounted heating system, such as our Tube Heaters or Plaque heaters.

 

Zoning: Finally, if your warehouse is designed with several separate zones, our radiant heating system can accommodate these to ensure your heating solutions are the most energy efficient.

 

Versatile Warehouse Heating Solutions

Within the same premises, low temperatures may be appropriate in product storage areas while higher heating levels will be necessary for the working environment of employees. This means that products are maintained in optimum condition and workforce comfort is assured.

Protecting metals from corrosion

 

Metal corrosion can be effectively via Schwank’s gas-fired systems. Here, as in other varied applications, gas-fired infrared radiant warehouse heating systems have proved their flexibility and problem solving capabilities.

 

Condensation inevitably occurs when an object is much colder than the air around it, but this problem was solved for Tata Steel in the UK by installing Schwank high efficiency infrared plaque heaters.

 

Infrared radiation does not heat the air, but is directly absorbed by objects such as floors and walls, which in turn convert the energy into heat. So, if a material with a temperature of 5oC is introduced into a building where the air temperature is 16oC, condensation will be avoided by heating the material until it reaches temperature equalisation with the air.

 

Generally, for the storage of steel coils, the objective is to maintain a relative humidity level well below 60%. A temperature increase from 14oC to 20oC can decrease relative humidity from 60% to 40%, which was achieved with for Tata Steel with speed and efficiency using our high performance warehouse heating system.


 

Keeping fresh produce in optimum condition

 

A Schwank project at a logistics centre in Saarland, Germany, of the major discount food retailer Aldi required a high degree of planning and testing before installation took place.

 

A healthy indoor climate was required through even temperature distribution throughout the interior space. The temperature levels from the warehouse heating system needed to provide ideal conditions for both the workforce and the products being stored, fruit and vegetables being particularly sensitive.

 

Six weeks of tests showed that the 25 Schwank gas-fired infrared tube heaters, covering a 10,500 sq. metre hall with an average height of 7.5 metres, showed that the required solution would be achievable.  Spinach was considered particularly susceptible to climate influences, but the trials proved that this vegetable neither wilted prematurely nor changed consistency. The conditions proved ideal for fresh produce!

 

The Schwank heating installation at Aldi is managed by intelligent temperature controls integrated into the premises building management system, creating nine separate heating zones.
